Welcome back, lovely SOUP readers, to your musical enlightenment! This time around, we're discussing the song "Biscuits" by Kacey Musgraves. Released early in 2015, this song was a part of her second album, Pageant Material. She wrote it together with a friend while working on another song, who randomly stated, "Mind your own biscuits".
I wasn't too sure what song to go for since a lot of songs about food have a non-PG13 meaning, so off to google, I was. An additional challenge was finding something for which I could find actual meaning that hopefully isn't your one song in the year every person has heard of.
The theme of the song is to simply mind your own business, and life will be a whole lot better. Being mean to and about others will not make you feel any better. You can't ever truly know what someone's going through, so who are you to judge someone else's life? It's a fairly straightforward song with nice imagery and a funny bit of wordplay, referencing the southern US dish Biscuits & Gravy.
It's suspected it's partially a dig at the south of the US, where women are known for loving a bit of gossip. Kacey herself was born in Texas, where this would've been a part of how she grew up. It's also where country music was popularized, which is Kacey's main music genre. She's known for some sass towards this area in general, so it wouldn't be out of the ordinary. The Southern Sass is also visible in the second verse:
Nobody's perfect, we've all lost, and we've all lied,
Most of us have cheated; the rest of us have tried,
The holiest of holies even slip from time to time,
We've all got dirty laundry hanging on the line,
That was it for this time's musical enlightenment. Next time around, we'll be back with yet another song. This is your favourite Fox tuning back out!
