Spirit Animals: Sponge and Jellyfish
By Desiree Snow
Now, you might be thinking, "How is this writer gonna be able to come up with an article about Spirit Animals that would fit the theme of the month?"
Well, while most of my fellow SOUP writers would focus on human ancestors. I'll be tackling the ancestor of a very familiar face.
Yup, you're looking at Spongebob Squarepants.
His ancestors beat any and all of the other ancestry, for the very simple reason that Sponges are the oldest living creatures. They trace their ancestry as far back as seven hundred and sixty million years ago. Not bad for a creature with no brains or backbone.
Prior to the greatness that is Spongebob, people would probably have been less than thrilled to find out that their spirit animal is a sponge. But having a sponge as a spirit animal is actually a great thing. Aside from being the ultimate sign of longevity and endurance, they are also a reflection of one's stability and reliability. Just like Spongebob, people with sponges as spirit animals are great friends. They are always there for you and you can be sure that they would always have your back.
Sponges are porous. Due to this trait, things pass through them and get filtered. Things which it needs to survive get absorbed while the rest are released back into the environment. It is important to know this trait since it explains the message being passed should you ever encounter or see a sponge (maybe on your next visit to the aquarium?). It is a message that one must never hold on to negative things in life.
Interestingly, the second oldest extant species are the Jellyfish. They have been around for more than six hundred million years. Again, not bad for creatures with no brains or backbones.
People who have Jellyfishes as spirit animals are the reserved type. The kind who mind their own business and simply go along with the crowd. But don't let their timid nature fool you, for just like the Jellyfish itself, they can be lethal when necessary.
If you ever get the chance to see a Jellyfish, the first thing you should do is swim away from it. Once you are a safe distance away, reflect on the message that the Jellyfish brings to you. This type of spirit animal is a sign that one must be alert and ready to guard oneself from potential harm.
And there you have it, my very far-fetched personal spin on the theme of ancestry. Sponges and Jellyfishes - these two creatures are the oldest living extant species. They have lived during a time when the earth was just a massive rock floating around in space. They were there during the time of the dinosaurs and even managed to outlive those giant and scary creatures.
Perhaps this is the reason why Spongebob is so fixated in catching Jellyfishes...
Anyway, See you next time for another crazy article about Spirit Animals!
