This month is all about Macbeth and here, in the Hobbit Library, I decided to sit down and read the famous play. Do not ask how it came to be in our Library... Cissarose says it's a secret and that is the way it will stay.
Anyway, Macbeth is a play by William Shakespeare. He was a famous playwright, who wrote a lot of works. I have to admit that I was hesitant about reading the play. I have read Romeo and Juliet and loved it, but I was unsure about Macbeth. I think either Cissarose or Briellerose read Hamlet, so I decided to find Macbeth and see what it was about.
I will confess that it wasn't something I enjoyed reading. The language stopped me from enjoying the story. I had to resort to reading a plot guide online so I was able to understand what was happening. The plot seemed interesting, but I'm just not sure why I didn't like it as much as Romeo and Juliet. Maybe it was the romanticism in Romeo and Juliet that helped me to enjoy it.
I really liked the start of Macbeth and how it covers Scottish history. I didn't know much in the beginning, but I sure learned something while reading. The start was interesting as it introduced the three witches and their... prophecy... That first scene sets off the rest of the plot. I managed to understand that much of it at least.
I'm not saying that the story and plot are bad... because they're not... I just didn't like the play. The language of Old English is fascinating and I know that if I looked at that first, I would've enjoyed the play better. I know that certain Shakespeare plays can appeal more than others and I think that was the case with me on this.
Macbeth can show people what happens when we allow things to consume us and drive us to madness while trying to achieve something that we desire to have. I do want to try and finish the play, so I will try to do a little more research into Old English and revisit the story later. I would like to finish it somehow.
Overall, there were some good points and I do want to revisit the story soon so I can read and understand it better.
Cissarose will be back again next month so come back and see what she's reading.
Lots of love,
