Day of the Dead DIY

By Cia

Hey everybody! You all know the Day of the Dead is coming, right? And what better way to spend this special time of the year than with a few beautiful DIY crafts of your own! Here is an absurdly easy DIY that takes a really short amount of time to make, and uses only common, everyday materials so you don't have to buy them. Enjoy!

Here is... the amazing luminous skull lantern! This craft was inspired by the sugar skulls that are used on Dia de los Muertos as offerings or decorations. But sugar skulls are awfully difficult to make, so here's a replacement for you to decorate your own home. This glow-in-the-dark DIY looks absolutely amazing, and it takes less than fifteen minutes to make!

Materials:
- glass mason jars (or any transparent jar, really; I just thought mason jars were of the most suitable size)
- sharpies (I suggest using black, to contrast with the light, but if you want to use any other color, it should still look great!)
- glow-in-the-dark sticks

Instructions:
1) Paint a sugar skull (calavera) design on your jar. Make sure the design is big enough, and the lines are thick enough! Here's an example if you want a design to use for your reference: Cia

2) Wait until the design tries, and then you can proceed to making your jars glow. The chemicals in glow-in-the-dark sticks won't stay luminous forever, so be sure not to do this step until it's nearly the time you want them to glow. Cut the tip of glow-in-the-dark stick, then pour the liquid inside into your jar. Close the jar tightly so that the liquid can't come out, then shake it until the chemicals cover the whole inside of the jar
***Make sure that you use gloves when you cut the glow in the dark sticks and do not let children handle them or cut them as the chemicals inside the glow stick can irritate skin and eyes. Some glow sticks also have glass inside so be careful when handling as there might be glass shards inside the glow stick.***

3) Put the pretty jar somewhere everyone can see it, and you're done!

Wasn't that easy? I know you're all just coveting for more of these lovely handmade crafts, but that's all I have for this month. Stay tuned for the next issue!

Ciao!
