So Good It's Scary!

by Pepper Mint

Greetings, Ghouls and Gals!

Halloween is right around the corner and that means sweets, treats, and lots of good eats galore!

It could also mean axe murderers, zombie plagues, and creepy dolls possessed by evil spirits, but that doesn't sound nearly as delicious to me, so I'm just going to blow past all that.

Ah, Halloween. The witching hour approaches. The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting colder, and if I see one more colorfully wrapped nougat I'll probably throw it at somebody. Sure, you could go for the tried and true party staples. A bag full of generic candy probably won't steer you wrong (unless one of your guests has a severe peanut or chocolate allergy, in which case, watch out!), but where's the fun in that? Where's the Halloween spirit?

Well, you've come to the right spot because I have plenty of spirit (not the alcoholic kind, sorry kiddies) to go around!

Today I'd like to share with you one of my favorite Halloween recipes: Mummy Dogs!

This recipe is so simple that with a flick of your wand you could easily conjure yourself a whole plateful - and another plateful for your guests, if you're feeling generous. But for those of you who like a more hands-on approach, I'm going to lay this recipe out for you in Muggle terms.

Ingredients:
* 1 can (or 8 ounces) of refrigerated crescent dinner roll dough
* 2 1/2 slices of your favorite kind of cheese (I prefer American, so I’m going with that)
* 10 Hot Dogs
* 1 Can of Cooking Spray, any brand you like
* Mustard or Ketchup, depending on your tastes

Cooking Utensils:
* You will need access to an oven.
* Scissors
* Knife
* 1 Large Cookie Sheet

Directions:
* Preheat the oven to 375°F or 190.5 °C.
* Unroll dough and separate at the perforations, creating 4 rectangles. Press on any remaining perforations to seal them closed.
* With a set of scissors, cut each rectangle lengthwise into 10 pieces. You will end up with 40 strips of dough.
* With a knife, slice your cheese slices into quarters. For the 1/2 cheese slice, you will simply cut this in half. You will end up with 10 quartered pieces of cheese.
* Wrap 4 pieces of dough and 1 quartered piece of cheese around each hot dog. These will be the Mummy's "bandages". Stretch the dough slightly to completely cover the hot dogs. About 1/2 in (or 1.25 cm) from one end of each hot dog, separate the bandages so that we can clearly see the hot dog's "face".
* On an ungreased cookie sheet, place the wrapped hot dogs (cheese side down). Spray the dough lightly with the cooking spray.
* Bake 13 - 17 minutes, or until the dough is a light golden brown and the hot dogs are nicely toasted. With mustard or ketchup, draw on the Mummy's facial features.

Ta-da! This recipe is easy-peasy, delicious, and is sure to be a hit at your next Halloween shindig. And please, feel free to experiment! Want more bang for your buck… er, goodies for your galleon? Try substituting mini cocktail sausages in lieu of hot dogs. These little delights would be a real treat at anybody's party - or even just as a midnight snack.

Give it a go and let me know how you do!

Happy cooking!
