I've been asked to attend a ball with someone of high standing, however, I'm not sure I should go. I mean, he isn't the nicest person and he's never really talked to me before. Why would he all of a sudden ask me to be his date? What should I do?

I cannot say for certain what his intentions are. However, if you say he is a figure in society and you are also someone of high standing then I would presume he is making this move due to the attention it would bring, for you and him. It is a smart move in terms of power. Or he may just like you.
If you are not a very influential person in society then you should pay attention to how he acts. Is he being deceiving? If so, then it's all an act and some sort of joke. If not then he may just like you. Take your chances with this or turn him down.
