Crafty Movies

By Sylvie DeLorn

After traveling through the various topics following the general theme of movie I’m pretty sure I know what’s going through my mind (and will blindly guess what’s going through yours as well). Why not host a movie night of your own?

While that’s a brilliant idea all on its own, there’s a lot of steps that go into hosting such an event, and the obvious one being how everyone is going to watch the movies picked out for this very special night. That’s where I step into play, I shall be the hero for the evening by allowing the enjoyment of movies to be spread through projecting movies onto walls or white sheets.

That’s right, for this craft, we’re going to make a projector all for our own!

You’re going to need the following items in order to complete this project:

An old box, such as a shoe box
Magnifying glass or a magnifying sheet
Something circular, like a role of tape
An Exacto knife
Some optional paint
A smartphone of some kind

I) Box setup.

If you’ve decided to paint your box you’re going to want to do this right now and wait for the paint to dry. Once that’s done, or if you decided to not do it, you’ll want to take your circular object and make a circle on the side of the box. You only need one of them.

II) Cut out the circle.

With the Exacto knife wielded in your hand like the sword of fantasy legends, you must now cut out the circle. Please be advised that these knives are sharp and can cause bodily harm, act accordingly and don’t lost any fingers.

III) Repeat with magnifying sheet

The circle that you draw and cut out of the sheet should be larger than the one that you cut out of the box. This is to ensure that the projecting part of the projector if fully covered and there are not any holes in the movie.

IV) Attach the sheet

Now that the sheet has been cut out, summon with all your might as much magic to hold the sheet into place! Or just tape it on, yeah that’ll work too.

V) Add in a smartphone

You’ll want to make sure that the phone is fully charged. Nothing would be worse than getting to the good part of the movie just to have the phone die. Once it’s been fully charged, or attached to a charging station, place the phone towards the back of the box. Load up the movie, hit play, and you’re good to go!

VI) Last minute touch ups

Besides setting in the projector in the right place, you’ll want to run a test trial with your projector. This can be simple like playing a random music video. A test trial is needed to make sure that your video isn’t being shown upside down. That would be unfortunate.

Now with this, I shall send you all on your way to be the greatest movie night hosts that you can be. Just keep in mind that not all cheesy, B-rated movies are advised to be shown at any kind of screening. (Especially that which included my personal hometown “myth” and favorite animals).

Happy crafting Slytherins.
