Art Around the World

By Zinnia Grayson

Hello to all of you lovely readers! I'm your new host writer, Zinnia Grayson. You may have noticed a change in the title for SOUP's art column. I found the other one rather plain and boring, and I figured this one sounded a lot more excited! I'm sure you're wondering how I'll be able to take you around the world to see art! Well, you've got to hold your horses. We will not be leaving the Slytherin Common Room for this issue. No, we need to go over some basics first.

That being said, we're going to be talking about all sorts of types of art! The question of "What is art?" is really too difficult to answer. Art is something that is interpreted differently by everyone! However, as you continue to read this article, you should think "Would I consider that art? Why or why not?"...

Of course, we all know the most common forms of art like drawing, painting, and sculpture. There's also photography, architecture, and film! Have you ever thought about carpentry as art? What about different forms of electronic art? Is culinary an art? What about light? There is so much to think about!

Carpentry can also be known as woodworking. Of course, a carpenter needs wood to craft things. They also need some sort of adhesive. Not only do they build and design furniture or buildings, but they can also create other objects like knick-knacks or decorative pieces. I really like the Hawaii Honu Murals

Next up is electronic art! This is really exciting and modern. Of course, this is most common among Muggles! They have neat gizmos and all sorts of things that we don't! They can do things like illustration and animation digitally. They can also program things (I'm told that it can make art pieces and such do things!). Additionally, there is something called Graphic Design. They can manipulate photos and do all sorts of things like make newspaper or magazine covers. Digital photography can also be placed in this category as it is using electronics.

One art form I think we can all love is food! This is called the Culinary Art. This would include cooking or baking. Now that I think about it, cakes can be really beautiful and artistic! I'm still not sold that cooking a meatloaf is art, but we must keep our minds open. Yes, we must!

Lastly, Light or Lighting is an art form. Yes, using light is an art! These artists are called Lighting Designers. Their art involves using light's illumination to get rid of shadows and brighten up certain places! Though, they can also create shadows. It shouldn't be surprising that they are involved in film and the performing arts!

I really do hope you learned something new about art this month! Next month, I do have a feeling we'll be doing a bit of traveling!

See you next month,
Zinnia Grason
