A Voice Of Reason

She Who Must Not Be Named

End of term is rapidly approaching, and the Wizarding World and Muggle World alike are abuzz with activity. Summer represents a magnitude of lively excitement; resulting in holidays and other such wondrous commotion. The days of endless sunshine and short moon filled nights have arrived, bringing warmer smiles and happier laughs to those awaiting the ending of the year. Freedom.

But freedom for some doesn't equal freedom for all. There are a few who watch on from the outskirts, apparently 'undeserving' of this famous break from life. You see, the thing is...

I am a Dementor. And I have feelings too.

Should it matter that my name sends shivers twisting down the spines of the bravest that walk upon this planet? Is it fair that we should be judged upon the description found within Dabbling with Dementors, i.e., soul eating, rattle breathing monsters? Gilderoy Lockhart never even got the chance to publish such a textbook before his mind became addled with nonsense. Do we listen to the words of a mad man?

Of course, those certain attributes are indeed correct, but why should you be so quick to judge? Whatever happened to the 'circle of life', as the Muggles would say? I despise those who affix a stereotype.

I have never known anything different from the lifestyle I live by. Who are you to say that this is wrong? I was brought up much like everybody else was, you know:

My first step was my first independent flight around the dank walls of Azkaban.

My first words were the abstraction of my first happy memory.

My first day as an adult was the completion of an entire soul sucking experience.

Just a little different, is all. You eat meat, I eat memories. There is a very fine line between us and what you people consider 'inhumane'. Sure, we naturally bring quite a downer upon social events, but can you look me in the eye and tell me truthfully that you have never met a pessimistic human being? In my opinion, you should be in debt to us. After all, we struggle by in a career that no witch or wizard would choose to follow in. The only career actually available to us, by the way! Judgemental beings, the lot of you.

Have you ever considered that maybe we are in need of a break from life as well? I don't even get weekends off! The contractual hours for a Dementor are dismal, and you are quite lucky not to have the same rebellion that is currently undergo at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! Though perhaps it is a topic I can approach at the next Dementors Anonymous : Don't Let Society Suck Your Soul meeting.

As you can see, there is 'more beneath the hood' than most seem to believe, and I have strived to earn a place within the SOUP community so I can tell my story. So, children, have fun on your holidays; get a sun tan, play some games. Personally, I've always been partial to kiss chase.
