Beat the heat!

By Desiree Snow

Pool parties are all about having fun under the sun! But don't forget to take care of your skin. Too much sun exposure can turn your sun kissed look into a burnt toast fiasco. So how do you protect yourself from all those harmful UV rays?

Well, the easiest way would definitely be to stay out of the sun. But that kind of activity is usually reserved for celebrating "Stay our of the Sun day" this July 3rd. An alternative would be to put on some sunblock. But those creams can be expensive, especially if you're skin is extra sensitive.

Don't fret! Here is a simple solution to all of your worries: simply make your own sunblock lotion!

In order to start this project, you'll need to get the following materials:

2 oz shea butter

2 oz coconut oil

1 oz zinc oxide

optional: 8 drops of essential oils like lavender, eucalyptus and peppermint

After you have gathered all of the ingredients, you'll need to melt the butter and oil together. I'd suggest you use a double-broiler so that you'd really be able to mix them up well. Then, remove the mixture from heat and mix in your zing oxide. Don't forget to wear a mask. Mix in your oil scent of choice and then place mixture in a container. Let it cool before covering and store in room temperature.

Voila! You have just made your very own sunblock. Now you can go out there and have a pool party from sun up till sun down!
