You know what? Even though it's much the same as I said last month over in Ranting & Raving, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE? Seriously though. Glitter. What a fabulous and frivolous thing. It's a MUST have when pranking someone for sure, but it's also quite pretty in decorations... so long as you aren't cleaning up after it the Muggle way. I do not understand the dislike, fear, or disgust towards all things Muggle by some folk. Some of their inventions are quite inventive and spectacularly villainous. *cough*
There was quite an uproar when the editors announced that the theme for this issue was All That Glitters, though perhaps not in the way you are thinking. On the other hand, maybe you DO have a devious mind like many of the writers. Most of us were ec-sta-tic with the news. Shiny things, vibrant colors, tiny metallic pieces of Muggle trickery and flamboyance... uh, I mean glitter. As per usual I have gone a bit off course as I have been relegated to the Crafty Corner this month, not Ranting & Raving or Magical Musings. With that being said I found something quite sparkly for y'all, lustrous even. You see, the Muggles have found a way to make their own version of a crystal ball... not that it works, mind you¹. It is pretty nonetheless and I wanted to share it with you today! I'll be listing the Muggle version and supplies in this article, though I am sure some of you super creative wix out there could totally make wizarding substitutes on your own.
Materials
Food coloring (Colovaria anyone?)
Glitter, optional (I, Kalina, personally do NOT think that this is OPTIONAL)
5-10 cotton balls, as needed
Strong glue (like hot glue or a sticking charm), optional
Base, or holder for the bottom of the crystal ball.
1. First off, you want to stretch and pull the cotton thingies. Make them seem bigger by completely tearing them apart.
2. Next you will want to sprinkle copious amounts of glitter into your plastic globe. Make it super shiny! Use as much Muggle glitter as possible... or don't. Whatever. *cough*
3. Then you will place the mangled cotton in the hollow, see-through Quaffle. That's right I made a Quidditch reference, deal with it. You will want to completely fill it (you may want to add more after adding water so ensure you have plenty on hand).
4. Now you can add even more glitter to your snow globe - see? I told you copious amounts.
5. It's time then to put the water in. Actual water, Aguamenti, your call. As much as you so desire. You will want to dye each cup of water to your preference first. Dye a little darker than you want because the cotton balls will make the color look paler in the end, all that white. Use the Muggle dyes here or Colovaria.
You will want to add the colored water slowly, in small increments. If you use several colors you should alternate colors so that you get nice swirls of color.
6. Fill the snow globe entirely. Perhaps do it over a sink or outside as placing the lid on after will dispel some of the liquid.
7. Finally, you will put on the lid before placing it on the holder. Are you brave enough to use Muggle glue? Or just a good, old-fashioned sticking charm will suffice.
I don't know about you, but I never did quite like Divination class. I'll take these plastic, Muggle versions as decor over a real one any day of the week. It'd be kind of hard to see the Grim in one of these, no?
It's time for me to go now... super quick. No reason. It's not like I spilt enough glitter to completely coat the SOUP break room or anything. Lugh! Do you feel like being a scapegoat again?
