The Music of Disney
- By: Cissarose of the Shire

Music has been crucial in many of the great movies that Walt Disney produced and created. A good soundtrack can often make or break a movie. There are so many amazing and memorable movie soundtracks from the thousands of movies. Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Mary Poppins, and who can forget the 2015 anthem of "Let It Go" performed by Idina Menzel on the runaway success movie Frozen?

Often a soundtrack can accelerate a scene into history, and sometimes it can help someone understand how a character is feeling. "A Whole New World" from Aladdin tells about how there is a new world beyond Jasmine's palace walls that she doesn't know. Aladdin sings of these wondrous, shimmering, splendid things, even managed to show her some as they ride on the magic carpet together. The scene shows how Jasmine learns about the world that she's never known and the song helps to show that.

Mary Poppins is a movie that combines dance numbers and songs. The songs can be almost lullaby like such as "Stay Awake" and "Feed the Birds", or they can be fast paced such as "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious". The fact that the faster songs can show how the song is meant to be a fun and jolly song can help the viewer to have a dance around during the songs.

Music has been a key part of the Disney works even before the first movie. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves was released in cinemas. The Alice Comedies were released in 1924-1927, and were based around a real life girl in an animated world. Music would have helped to understand Alice and how she was feeling during her adventures.

Silly Symphonies was a series of musical shorts in which music plays a central role. The music is what carries the stories and help the viewer to understand what is happening, if the action is slow or fast paced and the tone of the action as well. The series was so successful for Disney that they actually had a comeback at some point.

Disney have produced so many fantastic and magical movies and I find myself thinking if they would be as magical if it wasn't for the music. Another thing that has helped the movies is having singers who can sing the songs they created. Naomi Scott, the actor who portrayed Princess Jasmine in the 2019 live action version of Aladdin actually sang "Speechless" on set and Lily James also sang the songs that she was asked to sing.

Disney is magical through its storytelling but music and songs also help convey the magic. The whole idea is to make movies magical and that is through the storytelling, music and songs. I am sure that no matter what happens in Disney's future music will always have a key part to play.

Now I am off to get Second Breakfast. Goodbye for now,
