Analyzing the Zodiac Signs: January Edition

by Elena Black

Hello, everyone.

So one of the things few people know about me is I have always been intrigued by the Zodiac, both Eastern and Western. However, having been born in the United States, I admit I probably favor the Western a bit more. As intriguing as the Chinese signs are, I've done far more research on the twelve Western signs. I have therefore decided to do - more or less - a miniature but still in-depth report about the signs. To be more specific, I'm going to show what each sign looks like, relay information about their element, include traits linked to each sign, etc. Things like that; nothing too much but at the same time enough - hopefully - to make it interesting for you all.

Of course, I'm not going to cover all twelve at once. That'd be silly. No no, I'm just going to start out with the two linked to the month of January; Capricorn and Aquarius. So without further ado, let's begin, shall we?

First up is Capricorn. People born between December 22nd to January 19th fall under this sign. The symbol for Capricorn, as most of you may know, is a goat. Sometimes, Capricorn is depicted based off the Sumerian god of water, Enki, making the form look like a half-goat, half-fish. Capricorn is one of the few Zodiac signs where I've seen the symbol written out in two different ways yet refer to the same sign. One looks like this:

And the other looks like this:

Capricorn is an Earth symbol and has Saturn as its ruling planet.

Each sign is associated with both postive and negative traits.

For Capricorn, these include but aren't limited to:

Positive Traits: Practical, prudent, ambitious, disciplined, patient, careful, humorous and reserved. Negative Traits: Pessimistic, fatalistic, miserly, and grudging.

Among the Harry Potter canons, both Tom Riddle and Severus Snape are Capricorns.

What do you think? Does the sign seem to suit them? Yes? No? Somewhat?

Feel free to think on that. For now, onward to Aquarius!

People born between January 20th to February 18th are considered to be born under the sign Aquarius. Unlike Capricorn, Aquarius is represented by a humanoid figure. In fact, it's a water bearer. Although many tend to interpret the water bearer as a woman, it is actually based off the tale of Hyas. In Greek mythology, Hyas was a son of Atlas who was killed by wild beasts - many say boars typically - while fetching water from the river.

The sign for Aquarius looks like this:

Despite all the water associated with the sign, its element is actually Air! Fascinating, isn't it? The ruling planet for Aquarius is Uranus.

And now, here are the positive and negative traits for the water bearer sign.

Positive Traits: Friendly, humanitarian, intelligent, inventive, independent, and loyal. Negative Traits: Unpredictable, inconsistent, detached, stubborn, aloof, and extremist.

Harry Potter canons who fall under the Aquarius sign are Lily (nee Evans) Potter and Arthur Weasley.

And there you have it, a bit of a look at the signs including the month of January. I hope you enjoyed taking a look at these Zodiac symbols; I know I did.

Until next time,
Elena Black
