Chatting with... Narcissa Malfoy
- By: Serenity Black

They say that there is no greater love than the love a mother has for her child. She would give everything for them. She would do anything to protect them. Some would die for their children while others would lie to protect their children. That is what this month's guest for Chatting with did to protect her son.

Narcissa Malfoy nee Black was born into one of the wealthiest wizarding families in Britain. She was born into the Black family - one of the Sacred twenty-eight families. Mrs. Malfoy agreed to meet with me briefly to discuss the sacrifice she made to protect her son. She risked her life by lying to the Dark Lord. It was a risk that, luckily, worked in her favor and helped turn the tide of the war.

Mrs. Malfoy met with me in the Slytherin Common room where we conducted this Chatting with.

Serenity Black: Mrs. Malfoy, I want to first start by thanking you for taking the time out do this interview with me for the SOUP.
Narcissa Malfoy: Not a problem dear. I'm honestly happy to hear that the SOUP is still around today. I may or may not have written one or two articles myself when I attended Hogwarts. But, I'm honored you chose me.

SB: As you're aware, this month's issue is with regards to 'The Power of Love' and how love can triumph over evil. Those who aren't aware of what happened that day in the forest may never know how your act of defiance changed the outcome of the war. You did something that many would be afraid to do. You lied to the Dark Lord. Can you tell me about what was going on in your mind at that moment?
NM: I wont lie, I was terrified. However, when you're child is involved ... fear works a bit differently. You're not longer just afraid for your own life, there's another person you have to protect other than yourself - your child.

SB: So, why did you lie? I assumed, Draco would have been safe as he was your son and your allegiances at the time were to the Dark Lord.
NM: No one was safe! Not Draco, nor I. Our allegiances didn't matter. The Dark Lord didn't care who he killed to get to his destination. Draco wouldn't have been safe, he would never have been. I - I didn't want my son to live in a world where he was afraid. When all was said and done, Draco's life always came first. I needed to protect my son.

SB: ... and lying to the Dark Lord by saying that Potter was dead ... that was your edge for protecting Draco?
NM: Exactly, I knew - that the boy could defeat the Dark Lord. The moment that the Potter boy acknowledged that my Draco was alive, I knew what needed to be done. I lied, to save my son. He was my only priority.

SB: Thank you for sharing insight on that day in the forest. I don't want to take up more of your time. So, before we end this chat, would you mind playing a quick game of Rapid Fire Questions? You just say the first thing that comes to your mind based on the question.
NM: Oh, this ought to be interesting.

SB: Do you and Mr. Malfoy celebrate Valentine's Day?
NM: We do if Lucius can get away from the Ministry.

SB: Favorite memory?
NM: Draco's birth.

SB: Second Chances
NM: Must be earned

SB: Love
NM: Turbulent, but worth it all.

SB: That's all I have. Thank you so much, Mrs. Malfoy!
NM: It was a pleasure dear! Have a wonderful rest of the school year!

That my friends, is all for this month's issue of Chatting with...

This is Serenity Black signing off! Until next time...
