The exact date in unknown for when it started. Jazz just became something over time. Some say before the Civil War, in 1895 or in 1927 with LaRocca and his jazz band recorded their first record.

Before it was known as Jazz, which didn't catch one until 1910, it was called ragtime. Locals often referred to it as ratty music or even hot music at times. Many musicians actually bought their instruments at second hand stores, even pawn shops. Buddy Bolden is one of the very first cornetist to bring life to the music we now know as Jazz. He paved the way for such greats like Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, King Oliver and Louis Armstrong. Even though Louis Armstrong is possibly the most influential figure in Jazz. Armstrong was also inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame in 2017.
