Fox was filled with joy that they got to do the chatting with this time around. They'd stolen it from the lovely Katie this time around, before getting sick and not having much time to fulfil this task. It was quite sad, but Fox knew they had to make this work. You can't just steal something and then leave it laying around! That's just rude, and Fox couldn't get the title of being rude tied to her. That just doesn't sound right.
So hello everyone, it's FoxRiver here and as you know we're here to talk about Yule! And other December festivities. Today I will be chatting with PrincessCat and sharing with you some of her ways of celebrating. Without further ado, let the interview commence!
Fox: Hey Cat, would you be willing to do an interview with me around Yule/December traditions?
Cat: I mean sure I can, I'm not sure if I'm interesting enough though! Are we doing the witchy side of Yule?
Fox: We can go into any direction you wish to go. Witchy Yule, Christmas Celebrations, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, everything December celebrations!
Cat: Well, I can't really do religious holidays, but I celebrate Christmas and kind of St. Nicolaus. I also want to celebrate Celtic Yule this year.
Well I'm a big gingerbread baker, so I always bake soft gingerbread with chocolate coverings for my whole family and all of my friends, then my family usually eats together and my brother and I have the annual star fight, which means that I want a star on top of the Christmas tree and he doesn't. He usually wins cause our ceiling is like a millimetre too short to fit the star which I'm convinced he does on purpose. Then after opening gifts we play card games together, it's a pretty chill affair except for the games because everybody in my family is a goddamn cheater so it's more the Olympics of cheating instead of actually playing games.
Oh! And traditionally every year our tree falls over. We don't know why and we always try to prevent it but we always fail. It's like clockwork, we get the tree, we put it up, we believe it to be secure, it tilts, we secure it BETTER, we believe it to be secure, I try to put ornaments up, it tilts and falls, I catch it and yell for help, my mom laughs at me for a good minute before getting my brother to help and then we tie a string around the tree and attach it to the radiator on the wall.
Fox: Okay, I love this. Definitely interesting enough for our dearest SOUP readers! Is there any specific food you eat, or does it differ from year to year?
Cat: Basically whatever we feel like. We usually end up with the traditional geese or duck, the German version of dumplings and red cabbage with pears topped with cranberries sauce or we go with a fondue.
Fox: That's fair enough! Fondue's also a common way of celebrating Christmas over here. So what about St. Nicolaus, since you mentioned 'kind of' celebrating that one?
Cat: Not a lot to be honest, it's mostly just a family day but we still do the "St. Nikolaus brought you something into your boot" thing which means that when we wake up we get candy or as we get older books and stuff in our shoes. It's always fun the days after when you realise that you forgot some piece of candy and wonder why your shoe doesn't fit.
Fox: I definitely remember this from when I was younger too. Always lovely, especially when the candy gets squished up from trying to get your foot in to your shoe. You also mentioned wanting to celebrate Celtic Yule this year. How come?
Cat: This is actually going to be the first time I'm going to celebrate Yule and not just Christmas. I'm really excited about it cause I want to learn more about my ancestors. It's going to be a really small celebration, mainly just me lightening some candles to bring the light into the darkest time of the year and going on a walk to be closer with nature and maybe even find an oak to sit under for a bit. Honestly I'm still learning about Germanic and Celtic traditions so it's just small and sweet.
Fox: That sounds very lovely, though. Sometimes a celebration is just as nice as a bigger one.
This wraps up this issue's article of Chatting With... Thank you to PrincessCat for kindly agreeing to do this interview with me! If you want a chance to be featured in SOUP, look for Katie's thread in the Slytherin Common Room, or the main SOUP thread!
Until someone re-emerges from this cave again, this is goodbye from not-your-favourite pureblood Slytherin!
