Mmmmmmmm, ice cream. Just look at that beautiful picture, doesn't it make your mouth water? Maybe you wish you had some ice cream right now? Make you wish you could reach through the screen to eat it? Well, you may want to think twice about doing that because the delicious delight you see above is fake!
When it comes to film and television, not everything is as it seems. For instance, the food you see on screen often isn't even food at all! As you are probably well aware, ice cream melts, and quickly too under those hot film lights. To get around this issue, prop designers have come up with numerous ways to create fake, but real-looking frozen treats. Let's learn how to make some together! Fake ice cream is great for photoshoots, pranks, party decorations, and more!
OUR SOUPER METHOD!
This method does not use measurements to create flexibility for different textures- hard serve, soft serve, milkshake, etc. The lack of measurements also leaves room for experimentation and lots of fun!
INGREDIENTS
You will need the following materials: lightweight spackle, Flour, Craft paint, or food coloring (optional if you would like to make your ice cream look like different flavours), a mixing bowl and spoon, containers to showcase your ice cream, and foam balls (optional).
ALTERNATIVE: So maybe you don't want to fun to the craft store to buy whatever 'spackle' is. Well don't worry, we have an alternative recipe for you to try! Instead of using spackle and flour, substitute it with mashed potatoes! (real or fake).
For real mashed potatoes: butter=spackle, potatoes=flour. For fake mashed potatoes: water=spackle, mixture=flour.
1. Take your bowl and add some spackle and flour to it. The amount you put in will be dependent on how much fake ice cream you want to make. Are you looking to just make one cone for a prop or are you making multiple take-home party favours? The key guide for this step is: if it looks too wet, add more flour and if it's too dry, add more spackle. As you are mixing, you may add in coloring if you so wish! (If you want to create multiple flavours, get out some extra bowls and split your ice cream up to colour them.)
2. Once everything is mixed to your desired texture, scoop your ice cream into your desired containers, and ta-da! Some people like to spread their ice cream onto foam balls to create the perfect shape rather than scooping shapes. Either method can look great so it is up to your personal preference.
So what are you waiting for?! Try out our method and challenge yourself to make the most realistic-looking ice cream! We would love to see your creations if you feel comfortable sharing them!
Until I reemerge from my cave again, this is goodbye from your favourite totally bad evil scary sockeh Slytherin!
