Welcome back, lovely SOUP readers! This time around our theme is flowers, and with so many songs existing about flowers, I was quite stumped about which to select. My first thought was La Vie En Rose, but I prefer going over some lesser-known songs when and where possible. I ended up settling on Flowers by Lauren Spencer-Smith, which came out very recently on April 14th.
After picking the song and going to find its inspiration and meaning I was sad to find out I was not going to be able to write a whole article about it, which is why you'll find why I like this song so much afterward. Nine days before release the artist posted on her TikTok stating when it'd be released, but also what inspired her to write this song. It was being shown by her boyfriend that flowers aren't just for apologies, and being shown what it's like to be treated with respect and kindness. It's also a continuation of one of her other famous songs, Fingers Crossed.
Flowers was co-written by her friend Cian Ducrot in London, as stated by Lauren in a Genius interview. They'd been talking about the song 7 Years by Lucas Graham with a very similar melody across the song, and how they wanted to do something like that. 1 chord lead to the entire song being written.
I personally love the simplicity of the song. There's not a lot of stuff going on chord-wise, it's fairly short, and there are no overly complicated lyrical pieces within it either. The voice of Lauren is, in my opinion, also absolutely stunning. The lyrics are also very beautiful, and well-thought-out. I really relate to how Lauren talks about the song in her interview with Genius. Here's a little snippet of the song which has a very important meaning I'd like to share:
If there's anything I've learned, it's you should watch yourself
If it's hurting you, then leave and go and get some help
Until next time, lovely SOUP readers. I hope you enjoyed reading this article, and possibly the song if you chose to look it up! This is your favourite fox friend tuning out.
