Spell of the Month (The Unbreakable Vow)

By Trinity Langton

Yo fellow Slytherins!

You know what I've always found weird? The idea of falling out of love. What's the point in marriages if you end up divorcing? It just seems like something that you should be damn sure about really wanting, ya know?

Mind you, I can't speak from experience as my parents never broke up.

But with so many friends I do know who live with only one parent as a result of a divorce, I can ... sorta speak from experience.

Don't worry; I do have a point with this topic and linking it to a spell.

After thinking long and hard, I came to a conclusion. Well, at least an idea. It can be risky - mainly because of the side effects that come with it - but it makes sense. And it is partly already included in Muggle marriages anyway so ... it's worth considering, if nothing else.

What am I going on about now, you may be wondering?

Whether using the Unbreakable Vow would work or not.

If this sounds familiar, there's probably a reason for it. The Unbreakable Vow was the same spell used between Bellatrix Lestrange, Severus Snape, and Narcissa Malfoy. Bellatrix watched over and made the contract between Severus and Narcissa official. As you may or may not recall, the deal was that should Draco Malfoy fail to kill Albus Dumbledore, Severus would complete the deed to keep Draco safe.

With that being said and done, if it can help save lives - albeit in an unorthodox manner - why shouldn't it be used for something that's meant to be more permanent, such as marriages?

Now, as I already hinted and admitted, this does have a side effect.

Failure to keep your promise supposedly does result in whomever goes against the Unbreakable Vow to die. I'll admit, that is harsh, to some extents. And it is one of the few things keeping my iffy on following through with my idea.

All in all though?

It's not the worst idea I've had. Trust me on that much. For the time being, it's only a thought, not even much of a suggestion.

As for the actual spell itself? Interestingly enough, the incantation is actually unknown. However, here are the facts we do know about it.

Type: Spell
Hand movement: Place of wands to hands
Light: Red
Effect: Magical vow, fatal if broken

So ... that was horribly worded. What it means for the 'hand movement' is the people wanting to make a Vow must hold hands instead of using wands.

And ... that's all there is to it. In concept, the Unbreakable Vow is very simple. Executing and using it properly? It's more complex than one may immediately realize.

Well, that's my rant for this month, I suppose. Have a great summer!

Until next month,
