Welcome back to the music box! This time around we're discussing a song that's only very loosely related to this issue's topic, as I personally don't know many songs about spring at all. Let alone spring cleaning or lazy spring, and thus I went with a song I personally really enjoy.
Seasonal Depression by Mxmtoon and, as you might've guessed, is about Seasonal Affective Disorder. This is something Maia struggles with along with about 5% of the adult population of the US. More females struggle with it than men, and it typically lasts about 40% of the year. Though her SAD appears in Winter and Fall, wintertime is the typical time this disorder affects people, there is those who struggle with it in either Spring or Fall time. In Maia's own words "Seasonal Depression is about not liking winter. Bruh, I might be pale, but I still need sunshine".
The chorus consists of these lyrics, which shows what SAD is like for quite some people:
"Seasonal depression's got me sleeping off the days
And I've wasted all my time feeling grey
When the sun peeks out, I sit outside
To bask in my tiny bit of a light
To warm the cold that I feel inside"
Feeling energyless, tired, and exhausted. When there's even the tiniest bit of sun outside, it's nice to go out and try to absorb it, to try and 'warm' oneself inside.
When asked about the song by coupdemainmagazine.com, she told them it was an important song for her to write, as there are not many songs about the specific topic. It was also therapeutic to her, and the song being such a joy for others was a nice extra. Seasonal Depression is part of the album 'The Masquerade', which was her debut album. It came out in 2019. Cavetown helped and was the primary producer of the album, which offered her music a new sound.
The album as a whole focuses on Mxmtoon's journey of growing up, learning who she was and wanted to be, as well as the challenges along the way. The stories told through the song are universal experiences, so it's easy for others to listen along and relate. Maia's music as a whole tends to be relatable, especially for teenagers and young adults. It covers themes such as relationships, body image, identity, and teenage insecurities. The main sound of the songs tends to be ukulele-focussed, which fits the singer-songwriter's idea.
